How it works
Personal stories are interesting, but they are character-centric. That means they are more likely to engage your audience in you, the character, than in the science you want to communicate. To address this problem, Story Form Science invented a hybrid form of story that uses the elements and principles of story to directly engage your audience in your science content.
How do we help scientists harness the power of story to engage their audience in their science?
Personal stories engage your audience, but because these stories are character-centric, they are more likely to engage your audience in you as a person than the science you want to talk about. To circumvent this problem, Story Form Science invented a hybrid form of story that uses the elements and principles of traditional story to directly engage your audience in the science you want to communicate. Here’s how it works:
· We start by getting you to focus on your audience, what it is that you want them to learn, and why you want them to learn it. This helps you visualize the end or outcome of your science story.
· Once you’ve decided that, it’s time to identify what your audience needs to see and process to learn what you want them to know. We help you do this by guiding you in the creation of icons that represent units of content that are needed to achieve your outcome. These icons will be the playful pieces of your science story.
· Now it’s time to construct your science story. Here we give you a storyboard template and show you how to use your icons to create and assemble the elements of a science presentation. These elements are modified from traditional story to engage your audience in your science content. For example, ADDRESS the PROBLEM is derived from story’s inciting incident, STEPS take the place of story episodes, and THE QUESTION (inspired by the Dramatic Question) is answered by the outcome of your research.
· Once you construct a story, you deliver it in small groups of peers to get the feedback you need to reflect on, reassess, and revise your presentation.
